OVER €5.3 MILLION ALLOCATED TO INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS IN FIVE SERBIAN LOCAL GOVERNMENTS UNDER LIID
New grant agreements worth more than €5.3 million have been signed under the Local Infrastructure and Institutional Development Project (LIID) to finance infrastructure improvements in five local governments across Serbia.
Aleksandra Sofronijević, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of the Caretaker Government of the Republic of Serbia, signed the agreements with the Mayor of Sombor and the municipal presidents of Vladimirci, Krupanj, Knjaževac and Velika Plana. An annex to the existing agreement with the Municipality of Lajkovac was also signed, extending the deadline for project implementation.
The funding will support improvements to local infrastructure, including road and street reconstruction, the development of public spaces, green areas and recreational facilities, the construction of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, drainage system upgrades and the modernisation of street lighting.
Minister Sofronijević highlighted LIID as one of the most significant programmes supporting local governments in developing modern, safer and more climate-resilient infrastructure.
“One of the key strengths of this project is that local governments identify their own priorities and develop projects that address the actual needs of their communities, while the Ministry provides the financial and technical support needed for their implementation,” Sofronijević said.
To date, 126 grant agreements covering 174 approved projects in 91 local governments have been signed under LIID, with a combined value of €107 million.
In addition, 77 construction contracts worth €56.7 million have been signed. Works have been completed on 22 projects, while a further 44 projects are currently under implementation.
Addressing the next steps, the Minister stressed the importance of timely public procurement procedures, compliance with contractual obligations and the prompt mobilisation of contractors to ensure that approved funding leads to tangible infrastructure improvements.
“The Ministry will continue to provide technical and operational support to ensure that the approved funding delivers visible improvements on the ground and better living conditions for citizens as quickly as possible,” Sofronijević said.
